WTSBooks Staff Review: My God is True!: Lessons Learned along Cancer’s Dark Road
My God is True!
Lessons Learned along Cancer’s Dark Road
By Paul D. Wolfe
Banner of Truth
Paperback - 168 Pages
Micah Bickford* of the Westminster Bookstore writes:
My God is True! is a unique book. Wolfe does not overwhelm you with speculations on the deep questions of “Why is there suffering?” or “Why Me?” but he also does not give you simple platitudes. Instead, he invites you into his own battle-story with cancer and simultaneously points you to trust in God, your Sovereign Creator.
For Wolfe the ultimate struggle when facing cancer is the struggle that is common to every man and woman - the struggle to trust God. Wolfe never minimizes the reality of the physical and emotional suffering that cancer brings, rather he recognizes that real hope can only be found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Wolf brilliantly illustrates how easily we misplace our trust. He writes, “We put exclamation marks after the uncertain things, because we have managed to convince ourselves that they will certainly turn out in our favor . . . Conversely, we put question marks after the promises of the gospel, because we struggle to believe that something so wonderful — and so unseen — can really be true” (34). This is an illustration that I will remember and use in my own ministry.
The book concludes with simple, yet profound questions, “How dark, or bright, is your road now? More importantly, how is your heart? Is it dark with the shadows of discouragement and loneliness, or is it bright with the love of God and the hope of heaven? ” (150). This is not the shallow, “Just have faith and everything will be OK,” but an earnest plea for those battling cancer to know and trust Jesus Christ alone.
Whether you are personally diagnosed with cancer or know someone who is, here you will find the power of the Gospel for you.
